melanie campbell
Hello, and thank you for visiting my website. My name is Melanie Campbell, and I am a potter.
I make extremely functional items, and all pieces are stoneware, high fired in my electric kiln. All glazes are food, oven, and microwave safe, and, of course, contain no lead. Since I throw each piece individually, no two pieces are exactly alike. So many variables affect my ceramics since I respond to nature's inspiration. I live on California's Sonoma coast, and I use seasonal colors and shapes from the natural landscape in my creative process.
I was drawn into the clay medium because "form changing" fascinates me. Working with clay allows me to take something from the earth, mash it up, stir it, wedge it, heat it. and , like magic, change it into something completely different that still captures the elements of its origin.
My interest in pottery began as a child. I discovered clay from a friend's mother who threw pots as a hobby in her home studio. I was amazed by the process and was quickly drawn into this wonderful art form. I had to get my hands in the mud. I realized I had a knack for pottery after taking a few classes. Soon I acquired a wheel and began throwing. Unfortunately I was not set up to keep finished work and I had no kiln, so I never kept anything I made. Life's demands forced me to retire my wheel for a long time, but I rediscovered working with clay in a college ceramics program. Since then, I have educated myself extensively on glazes and clay bodies.
Nothing makes me happier than to see my work out there in the world being used, appreciated, and touched by many hands from many places. In some small way, I feel I am helping to remind us of our close connection to each other.
I hope you will enjoy seeing the pieces I have displayed on this wesite. Each one reflects the spirit of my creative process.
